Chicago Imagist Roger Moy
I moved from Southern California to Chicago in 1973 to attend graduate school and immediately fell in love with the Chicago imagists and the city. I admired the artists who didn’t use New York as a yardstick and loved the city for not wanting to be New York. I do love visiting New York but, Chicago is truly my home.
My work has dealt with the same visual issues since I started making “stuff.” My interest in surfaces goes directly back to Southern California low riders and the soul and imagination put into every “bad short.” My visual connections may all begin above the neck but the need to express and execute are always driven from the neck down.
I think I’ve been making the same piece again and again, dipping into my recycle library hoping to get it right one day. I know perfection is not an option but, that’s all I’m shooting for.
